Soul Road Trip

When our time comes, how will it go? We wonder and may have our own preference on how the end shall come to pass. When it does happen however, death may be more mundane and, in contrast, more mysterious than we think.

When our time comes, how will it go for us? We wonder and may have our own preference – and not so much a choice – on how the end should come to pass. Most of us would prefer to avoid violent, spectacular exits and choose one that’s peaceful, where all loose ends had been tied up and everything that needs to be said, has been said in the relationships that matter most to us. Some would like it where the spirit of the recently departed lingers to say goodbye, before taking leave. I’d imagine that’s reasonable to want. Personally, I prefer stories where the characters leave their bodies in a dignified manner, the energy of their earth-bound selves – call it Soul or any other name you like – levitating gently and floating away into a night sky splattered with stars. In the movies, such an exit would be witnessed by a fallen character, like an excommunicated priest whom nobody would believe if he related what he’d seen. But in reality, death might turn out to be more mundane and, in contrast, more mysterious than we expect it to be.

Have you heard of lonely deaths where the body is discovered sometime after death, in an apartment or a parked vehicle? Imagine such a possibility. Imagine that the end comes at an almost deserted gas station along a lonely highway, where the soul in question departs via the roof of a parked car while the body it formerly occupied is still seated inside and safely belted, witnessed by a Labrador Retriever, alone in the pickup next door, whose owner had gone to the washroom. The dog senses something is happening and indicates it’s awareness by whimpering briefly before resting its head against the glass, and continues watching with an expression that’s a cross between trepidation and sympathy. All is silent and still for a long moment. Until the sound of the washroom door opening and slamming shut makes the dog turn and look to see its approaching owner.

The owner gets in, greeting his pet. He starts the vehicle, puts it into gear and drives off, not noticing that the man in the car next to him hasn’t moved since he’d first seen him. Two miles down the road, the owner does notice that his Labrador isn’t its usual lively self. He flicks on the cab light and looks at the old dog. It returns his gaze. He’d been a dog owner long enough to know, by peering at the Labrador’s eyes, that it wasn’t happy. He reaches out and runs his fingers through its thick fur repeatedly, saying a few comforting words. The Labrador turns its head, it’s gaze coming to rest on the rear compartment of the pickup. The owner does the same. He doesn’t see anyone or anything there. He brings his attention back to the road ahead and keeps driving, one hand on the wheel and the other continuing to stroke the dog’s neck, while the Labrador keeps its gaze on the rear of the pickup, with the same expression of trepidation + sympathy. The pickup rolls on smoothly down the highway, its tail lights a pair of red stars disappearing into a night still pregnant with possibilities.
