All he had to do was exit the bazaar road and that would leave him only half a kilometre away from the mission. Under ordinary conditions, it would have been a breeze but not on this particular Sunday.

It was midday under a cobalt sky. The interior of the grimy white Benz, despite having its windows wound down, was like an oven and the dashboard mounted fan was putting up a furious but ultimately useless battle to cool the air. The red leather seats of the car only served to trap the heat created by the driver’s body. Imitation Ray-Ban shades hid his stony eyes. With close cropped hair and traces of a future beard, he was perspiring all over. He wiped fresh sweat off his forehead, slowing the Benz down as it came up to the rear of a hulking lorry. Traffic had turned off the main artery into town and was heading through the narrower but nearer bazaar road. That would bring him out only a short distance from the embassy. An analogue clock next to the cigarette lighter indicated there was enough time to get to his destination. Two o’clock was still far away.

The lorry swayed – it was a lazy seesawing motion – as its weight kicked up sand continuously, sending dust swirling through the air. The road he was driving on was being hemmed in by rows of tents. Sunday morning merchants, with wares and animals, came into view. As the car’s fluid motion gradually reduced to a crawl, he watched the faces around him from behind his shades. His eyes darted about, taking in the figures moving, standing or gesturing on either side of the Benz. A murmur in the background grew, becoming the noisy atmosphere synonymous with middle-eastern bazaars. Voices of strangers travelled into the automobile, invading the space around him and intruding on his thoughts.

The driver was talking softly to himself as his progress was gradually being impeded.

“Why did I pick this route?”

“This will clear soon.”

“It will move faster once this stretch passes.”

“I should have left it alone.”

“Damn this lorry.”

“God help.”

“Come on!”

He began wiping the perspiration off with greater frequency and drumming the fingers of his free hand on the hot dashboard. His wet shirt felt as if it had melded with his sticky skin to become one. Traffic eventually slowed to walking pace and he could feel eyes glancing brazenly into the Benz. He’d made sure the doors were locked and the windows only slightly open to prevent anyone sticking a hand in. But the powerful smell of the hand-rolled cigarettes they smoked couldn’t be kept out and found its way into his nostrils. It made him yearn for a cigarette. He couldn’t have one right away, he knew that. “Maybe I’ll stop and have one outside the car before the embassy,” he thought.

He looked at the clock once more, then back to the lorry’s stagnant rear and said,

“Come on! Come on! Move!”

Putting his free hand on top of the passenger seat, he twisted back to make sure everything was okay inside the car. The seat behind him was covered with odds and ends. A blanket lay crumpled on the floor. The groceries and hardware he’d purposely bought the evening before lay scattered across the red leather, diverting any wandering eye away from the hand-woven sack (actually, it was not a blanket) on the floor. What was underneath could not be seen from any of the windows.

All he had to do was exit the bazaar road and that would leave him only half a kilometre away from the mission. However, the sensation of moving was maintained, despite the slowed vehicles, by the faces swimming past on both sides. Bodies outside were swaying, surging and retreating in the sun. He felt like a fish in a steaming glass bowl, seeing a distorted world in 360 degrees. His vision was made worse by the stifling heat and his own sweat finding its way into his eyes. He stepped on the accelerator and the car jumped forward, then stopped again as soon as he braked. Still ahead was the inching lorry on a road too narrow for overtaking. He realised its brake lights were not functioning properly. Forcing himself to sit back, he let his eyes wander again. He held the steering firmly in one hand, feeling out of place, sitting in that scratched, milky car in the middle of the bazaar.

They had circled the car and rocked it until it turned over, broken the windows and dragged the driver out. An image of the Benz being overturned sent icy chills up his spine in the burning heat. He could not remain where he was. A solution was needed.

At the right-most edge of his vision, a thin man appeared, walking along the edge of the Benz’s front bumper. Map-like lines ran over his sallow, aged face. The thin man looked in his direction before turning away. Holding on to the fingers of his outstretched hand and trailing closely behind was a little girl with her dark head scarf resting on her shoulders. It struck the driver that she was very pretty. She would probably grow up to break many hearts, he thought as a fleeting smile crossed his countenance.

The driver’s musing ended abruptly as another blast of horns rang in the air. Reactively, he let go of his clutch a little too fast and the Benz lurched forward. But the lorry did not move. Its brake lights were still off. The sound of his car bumper hitting something made him floor his brakes. He thought he’d hit the lorry. To the right, the thin man was not to be seen and the girl was bending over, panic written in her eyes. It took a split second more before he realised what had occurred. Unknown bodies had materialized and were milling about the front end of the Benz.

His heart rolled and dived in his chest, as he realised he may have caused a very risky delay by his carelessness. Accusatory faces eyed him through the dirty windscreen – self-righteous stares aimed specifically in his direction – and then back to the fallen man. Someone shouted and gesticulated wildly at the driver. Another fellow wore a wicked smile and wagged a finger accusingly, implying something like ‘the game is up’. A couple of fists banged on the driver’s side windows.

“Do I have time for this?” the driver asked, swearing audibly. The road ahead was clear. The lorry had driven off. He thought of swerving to one side of the crowd and taking off as well. But there was no way he could move the car as some men remained standing in his way and others were taking the opportunity to cross the road at that very moment. His mind was spinning as he remembered what he had in the back of the car and where he had to go. He looked around. The sea of people continued to swim past. Most were unconcerned about the little accident and continued on their way, amid the incessant buzzing and humming. But the men around the accident scene remained, watching and waiting for his reaction.

He dug his fingers into the leather of the steering wheel and gritted his teeth. The clock showed 1:35. His mind flashed back to an accident he had seen several weeks earlier in a similar public place. The crowd had become unruly when that driver had refused to cooperate. They had circled the car and rocked it until it turned over, broken the windows and dragged the driver out. An image of the Benz being overturned sent icy chills up his spine in the burning heat. Taking out his wallet, he saw the crisp, freshly arranged bank notes lined up neatly inside, starting from the smallest to the largest denomination.

He noticed again that the road beyond the mob had cleared as he threw the Benz’ door open. Swinging his boot legs out, soaked cotton shirt clinging to his frame, he strode purposefully to the front of the car. Someone shouted for the victim to be taken immediately to a hospital. He felt a shove on his shoulder from a turbaned stranger clad in black as he passed, trying to trigger a response. He ignored the provocation as well as the clamour of voices around him. His mind was made up on what he would do.

The thin man had been helped to his feet by the time the driver reached him. A physically frail specimen to begin with, the former’s expression showed that the incident had momentarily disorientated him. The little girl- she seemed too young to be his daughter- clung tightly to his bony arm, her dusty cheeks streaked with fresh tears. She averted her eyes from the approaching driver. In a firm but friendly voice, using the local language, the driver asked if the older man was fine. In response, came a passive nod of the head followed by a slow lifting of his dirty and crumpled trouser bottom to reveal an ugly gash on an ankle.

The driver produced a bundle of banknotes – mostly in the smallest denomination but with a couple of larger ones tucked in between, visible only at close range – from his pants pocket and placed it in the little girl’s hand, closing her fingers around it. As he did so, his fingers brushed against a silvery metal on one of her digits. It was a ring. Startled, he released her hands quickly. Shifting his gaze from the girl’s eyes up to those of the wounded man next to her, he apologised in Arabic and then promised he would make amends for the accident.

Pulling himself together, he stepped back and spoke in an authoritative voice to the men surrounding the victim,

“Bring him to the other side of the car,” and striding back to the Benz, he waved fiercely to the rest of the onlookers, “I will take them to the hospital. Now clear the way!”

He swung back past the still open door on the driver’s side, got in and slammed it shut. Taken completely by surprise by the driver’s response, the volunteers holding up the injured man began leading him to the passenger side of the Benz, the girl following closely. The crowd stepped off the road in a disorderly manner but with more urgency. A few others stood by, sending cold stares at the driver and continuing their commentary. He ignored them as he started the engine.

Gripping the wheel, he pressed the clutch and threw the thin, black stick shift into gear. As the assisted man reached the still closed passenger door, the driver released the clutch and the Benz roared as it swerved to the left, its tyres sending pebbles flying in its wake. Realising what was happening, someone kicked the passenger side as the Benz accelerated, breaking the side mirror. As thick dust began filling the rear windscreen, he saw several men running after him with fists waving, screaming profanities. He also saw the thin man leaning on the girl who stood pressed against him, both dumbfounded, before grey swirls completely hid them from sight.

The Benz surged like a freed animal. Leaving the bazaar road and catching up with traffic within minutes, he had overtaken the lorry which had delayed him. 1:51. He won’t have time to leave the car for a last smoke but he didn’t care. And the relief he now felt coursing through him was not because he had got away from the accident or because he would be able to make it in time to the embassy. He welcomed the feeling with a silent prayer as he allowed himself a glance over his shoulder.

In the rear seat, the groceries and hardware remained as they were. The coarse sack still lay over the bomb, its wires and tapes safely out of sight. The thing about home-made explosives is they can be extremely unstable and volatile. Excessive temperatures or a stray spark could easily set one off. Violent movement would do it too. He knew that much, if nothing else, about explosive devices. He imagined the sea of people from minutes earlier and saw the man he had injured and the frightened girl. An involuntary shiver forced its way palpably through his body. God knows what would have happened if things had gotten out of control back there.

The road ahead was clear and he drove steadily, gripping the wheel and focusing ahead. Within minutes the embassy appeared. The mission building and short driveway were protected by rolls of barbed wire and thick walls on three sides. A soldier stood in green fatigues behind a barrier which blocked the entrance, rifle at the ready, watching vehicles passing by on the main road. Large Roman and Arabic lettering identified the embassy.

The Benz wheeled right up to the barrier and stopped, its engine left running. The soldier raised his gun and cocked it, instantly on alert. Another uniform stepped out from a small booth next to the barrier, also armed. Opening the Benz door, the driver, still wearing his Ray-Ban, got out with both hands in the air.

“I need to talk to someone in charge,” he said loudly in clear English, knowing he would be understood, unable to look anywhere else but at the two gun barrels pointed in his direction.His words had been rehearsed.

“What do you want?” a fierce voice shouted with a barely perceptible undertone of panic. The soldier spoke in English. Then the question was repeated in recently learnt Arabic.

“I need to talk to someone,” was the driver’s response, still in English, “I have something important to discuss.”

More soldiers were outside by then, weapons drawn.

“What do you want!?” it became a statement, repeated in two languages once again.

“I want to speak with someone in authority. In my car…” he gestured with one hand while looking at his Benz, as he heard several automatic rifles being cocked, “I have found a bomb. Please take it away from me.”
