Emma’s Garbage

Emma’s mother had been right about men.

Emma (not her real name) lifted the crinkly garbage bag with effort, and let it drop into the community bin, doing it fast and neat so that she wouldn’t have to breath in the foul stench of whatever else was in the dumpster. She closed it with a loud thud, took a few quick steps away and filled her lungs with the fresh dawn air.

She stood straight up, feeling good about herself, until she saw the slim runner-girl from the next block come down her apartment steps, toss her ponytail in Emma’s direction and take off on a run, her perfect figure clothed in her perfect sporting outfit, oozing self-awareness of the very fact. With a snort Emma turned towards her own building and began marching, having lost the nice feeling she had tasted momentarily after she’d dropped the lid on the dumpster.

A couple of honks and the sound of hydraulics made her turn around and look down the long, wide road lined with identical dumpsters. There it was, right on time, Saturday morning at daybreak. The garbage truck with the unusual logo of a swan on its side. A private contractor recently hired by the City Council. At least these fellows were punctual. A couple of men in blue coveralls were watching as a dumpster was lifted high up and it’s contents emptied into the rear of the truck. An indistinct figure sat behind the wheel, also in blue. Probably a man too, Emma thought, although she couldn’t be sure from that distance with her weak eyesight. As Ponytail jogged past the truck, perfect posture and all, the driver and the two men by the dumpster turned and watched her go. Yup, driver is probably a man too, Emma figured.

They’re all the same. Like her late husband Earl, who had turned out to be one big mistake eventually. But she had been young then and in love and, quite frankly, naive as well, so she couldn’t blame herself for having been blind to his bad habits in the beginning. Her list of boyfriends both before and after her solitary marriage don’t make for encouraging reading either. No one to shout about, or to keep, from that list. She’d been poor at picking them, that much she’d admit. Including her most recent one. Very recently deceased, she had to remind herself. His name was Steve but he had preferred to be called Sev, because it sounded Continental apparently. Well, a bastard by any other name. They were all alike.

As she reached the stairs to her apartment, she let her eyes linger on the dumpster she had just used. The contents would be lifted and emptied soon into the truck that was inching up the street, hazard lights blinking.

She’ll probably miss Sev for a bit, but what did her mother used to say? Don’t get too attached to the bastards because sooner or later, you’ll want to dump them.
